Delicate sport of RC Drifting has been around for over a decade now and we can see here at the shop the trend that it is getting popular again. We will always have plenty of excellent Ready-to-Run Drift cars ready to ship anytime you feel like but hey what if we build our own ground up from the Kit?
RC Drifting has evolved to it's own sport from good old Touring RC. Basically a RC Drifter can be any on-road (also known as touring cars) RC car that has been modified to suit drifting tracks.
Most significant difference are the tires. While Touring Cars use rubber tires with good grip, Drift Cars use hard plastic tires that have as low grip as possible.
If you are a beginner, we really recommend you to get a RTR 4WD drift car kit. 4WD is much more easier to handle and practice and while 2WD drifters perform better, they really demand some skill to keep in nice long slide.
Today, there is a exhausting availability of Drifter Specified chassis kits that are insanely good when it comes to performance. Check out here what we have at the shelf at the moment!
Professional Kits can be anyhow recommended after you've learned the basics. Handling an RC Drift car is very challenging and if you go for a very High-End Kit for the starter it may be just too hard to have any fun. These may also be very expensive to build. Maybe it's better to try something that teaches you the basics before you dive to deep end.
Of course, if you are sure what you are doing we do recommend always to get a kit that suits your skill level.
Fastest way to Sideway-Sliding Action is to grab a Ready-To-Run (RTR) Car Set, charge the battery (if included!) and hit the local track! Most RTR-level Drifters are with 4WD setup so there is no need to add anything extra like gyros or anything.
Sure, the performance and turning radius is not at the level of the upper-shelf special kits but with these you can try out if RC Drifting is for you!
HPI is one of the cornerstones in RC and their Sport 3 chassis is excellent choice for anything on-road. It is shaft driven 4WD and is known to be easy to handle and passion to work with.
With full time shaft driven 4WD, a fully sealed drivetrain, waterproof 2.4 GHz electronics and radio gear, fully independent double wishbone suspension and adjustable oil filled shocks, Sport3 is solid choice for any On-Road RC action!
There is also Touring Spec (non drift) versions of this car available but as we are talking about drifters, we recommend you to select a Drift version.
Latest out is Driftworks BMW E30 that is fully assembled and ready to hit the track. Everything needed is included - just charge the battery and you are good to go!
HPI E10 is more budget friendly than legenday RS4 Sport3 but is still a quality car that is easy to slide around. This cool 4WD Nissan Skyline GT-R pays respect for famous drifting crew, "Fail Crew". This set includes everything you need, even the radio batteries are included!
Very recommended for a first car!
The Heat Is On! RC Drift Cars look and perform amazingly.
There are two ways to approach this - You can select a specially designed chassis that is meant only for Drifting but you can build a fine drift car from budget Touring Car Kit.
To smash it in nutshell - just take any Touring Car kit or something that looks like one, install fast-enough electronics, throw set of drift tires under, pack up the rear diff with super thick fluid and you are good to go!
However, it is very true that a real RC drifters skate in the class of their own. Just like all other professional level RC kits do - but the price is not necessary so nice anymore.
To get most out of your new drifter, we really recommend you to select quality level of ESC and Motor for your car. Hobbywing has created a beautiful set of Drfit Spec electronics but there is also other options.
Hobbywing Drift Spec Motor D10 and Drift Spec ESC XD10 are specially tuned to meet the demands of RC Drift car and offer the best performance in a very easy package.
Hobbywing Drift Spec Electronics can be recommended for all 1:10 Drift Cars as a useful and easy upgrade.
Drift gyros are Driving Assistant systems and are small little boxes that connect between the radio system and servo. In some cases the gyro may be built inside the ESC. Some receivers are featured with this function also.
When operating, gyro senses the direction of the car and performs counter-steering (by operating the servo) to keep the car in nice slide or to keep it in straight line. Some gyros may also operate with your throttling. Gyro enables the car to steer itself back to center if it needs to based on the setup its programmed to.
Gyro does its operations very fast and when working properly, its hard to even notice that its doing its job!
They are used most commonly only in 2WD (rear wheel) driven Drift Cars as they are the most useful in these. It can be also installed in 4WD car but the advantage is not so significant. There are also 4WD specified drift gyros in the market.
Gyro should be optimally placed at the very center of the cars centrifugal point for best performance.
Note that gyros used in RC Drift work differently than gyros used in RC airplanes or drones.
Tires play important role in game of drift. Often tires selected in RC Drift Cars are very hard and very slick low friction tires. Full plastic tires are also used very commonly. You should try out few different types of tires to find out what suits your driving style and skill level at this point.
Sized used in RC Drift Tires and wheels is the common 26mm wide tire, same that is used in RC Touring cars. Most of touring wheels fit without problem here but please note that offset may be different depending on your car.
Exciting sport of RC Drift is fun and while challenging, it offers plenty of warm and cozy indoor RC fun! Building your own special RC Drift car is also very rewarding - what would your ride look like?
