From the Backyard to a Track

When you are already the king of your own backyard, it's always a good idea to go and visit a local track. Going to an active RC car track is a great eye-opener, and will usually result in a lot of new inspiration and motivation.

Other hobbyists are usually more than happy when new people show up and you can learn from their experience and get great tips for driving your RC car.

How to find tracks, and how it all works

Going to a track, especially if it is actively used by racers, can feel intimidating at first, but the reality is that there is nothing to be afraid of. As long as you behave and show common respect, most everyone will be more than happy to see you at the track and will help you if you just ask.

The best way to pick up new knowledge and skills is to challenge yourself, and learn from more experienced RCers. Driving on a purpose-built track will demand new skills of you as a driver, and will also make you much more aware of the car's handling etc.

Nowadays it's usually easy to find local RC tracks. How far away the closest track is obviously depends on where you live, but you can usually find information with a quick Google or Facebook search.

There are different tracks for different sorts of cars, so the closest track might not always be for the type of car you have. It's good to keep this in mind, and perhaps ask online or visit the track without a car first. Also be a aware that you might have to pay a track-fee for running on the track, although many clubs/track let beginners try it out first

Many clubs/tracks do special days or evenings for beginners, and when you do decide to visit the local track, it is often good to do so on day with active drivers present, as they can show you the basics about the track and facilities.

Here are a few common sense rules to follow at the track:

  • Respect the rules of the track
  • Always behave respectfully towards others at and on the track
  • Always give space to faster cars on the track by letting them past
  • Always stand on the drivers stand when you drive your car on the track
  • Do not yell or disturb others on the driving stand
  • Never drive the track in the wrong direction
  • Don't race people on track when practicing, if not agreed beforehand
  • If you see someone crashing while you are not driving, help them by turning their car over
  • Clean up after yourself before you leave the track

As long as you follow these basic rules, you will have a good time at the track, and people will be happy to have you there. Remember to ask questions from experienced racers, and remember also that it takes time and practice to learn to drive. Remember that we have all been beginners at some stage!

Now go visit your local track, enjoy your RC car, and meet new friends!
