How To: Seal FTX Carnage/Bugsta Gear Cover

FTX Bugsta and Carnage are both cool looking entry level RTR car kits. By our customer based experiences driving on dusty and loose gravel surfaces, there is a possibility that little rocks and other small debris may end up inside the spur gear cover.  In this short "How To" article will show how you can enhance the sealing of the gear cover.

Basically there are two possible locations where the debris can access the gear cover.

  • 1st is located in front of the motor mount
  • 2nd is located behind the gear cover, below the shaft.

Needed accessories for this project:

Just follow these steps below and the gear cover is sealed properly in no time.

Step 1

Unscrew mounting screws (total of 4) from the top plate. Motor mount button head screws (1.) and flat head screws (2.)

Step 2.
Use one flat head screw (2.) to hold the motor mount on the top plate.

Screw does not need to tightened hard just a tad is enough to hold the motor mount in place.

Step 3.

Turn the car upside down and unscrew motor mount screws (3.) and gear box screws (4.)

Step 4.
Now turn the car back and remove the whole rear end of the car.  First lift the gearbox gently and pull backwards.  Note that center drive shaft drops down and the whole rear end separates from the chassis.

Step 5.
Turn the rear end upside down to see the points we want to seal with tape.

First cut needed length of tape to seal the rear of the gear cover. Remember to leave little bit of space between axle and tape.

Same thing on front of the motor mount. Fold the tape over the corner so it will stay between chassis and the motor mount for tight seal.

Step 6
Now we start reassembling the car.  Mount the rear end back to the chassis. First push towards the front (remember to mount the center shaft) then push down.

Step 7.

Remove the flat head screw which was holding the motor mount and screw it back on its real place. Screw rest of the top plate screws back on their place (Flat heads 2. and button heads 1.)

Flip the car over again and screw the motor mount screws (3.) back and then the gearbox screws (4.)

Result

Now the gear cover is properly sealed from the front and back side.
