Wroom! This is Heikki from EuroRC Storage Room! Remember last time when I told you it is time to go inside as winter is coming? It appears that nobody listened as all of you folks seem to be building RC Rally Cars now! Even better because you can drive these both inside and outside if you feel like!
Real Rally Racing is always dirty and dusty while Touring Cars like to keep things tidy. RC Rally Cars are basically tuned up touring cars by their soul so end of the day there is no much difference between these two.
With few easy modifications you can make your touring racer to suit rally and vice versa. Lets go outside one more time and push the pedal for the medal with EuroRC Best RC Rally Cars!
TLDR: Our best RC Rally Car at the moment is the magnificient HPI Racing WR8 1:8 Subaru Impreza 2001. Hands down it is the best. There is no reason for you to read further and learn about fun yet tempting RC Rally Cars!
We All Bash Down Here
A true pioneer in RC Rally is of course Tamiya. They were - if not first (too busy to google sry) then atleast among the first ones - to publish a realistic looking and functional RC Rally. Very first ones to have some real rally look in it were Volkswagen Golf Group 2 CS and Renault 5 from early 80's.
They were not really very suitable for offroad rally action but what I appreciate is the looks here. Rally cars have to look like a rally cars! Today both of those cars are super rare and valuable collectible items today but good news is that Tamiya is releasing their legendary Golf Mk.1 in M-05 chassis Limited Edition later this year. Follow our posts to grab one!
First RC Rally Car? Legendary Golf MK1 will be soon available again in M-05 chassis but only for limited time.
Perhaps the first Tamiya we could title as a pure Rally Car is Audi Quattro Rally from year 1982. This rear wheel driven car was based on original Wild Willy Chassis so the conclusion to be made here is that all RC Rally roots back to laid-back wheelie poppin RC foolishness.. what today is know as Art of Bashing!
Here in our EuroRC Museum of Radio Contolled Cars we have near mint condition Tamiya Opel Ascona 400 Rally based on same Wild Willy type platform, have a closer look please.
In dreams of many but in hands of few. Tamiya Opel Ascona 400 just where it belongs. In our RC Museum!
Touring Trainer Zero Two
Say what you like but Tamiya TT-02 chassis is one versatile platform! What other chassis can transform from stunning Supercar Replica to pretty-OK performing Off-Road Buggy and all the way to Tracked Crawler Truck version? Yeah. While Master Of None it is definitely a true Jack Of All Trades of RC cars.
TT-02 is a very basic level (cheap!), shaft driven full time 4WD touring platform. Like most Tamiya cars, it is excellent shelf queen but for real racing you need to do some minor fixes. If nothing else, at least change the ball bearings and get more ride height by removing the shock limiters.
Install better shocks, good tires (Rally Block all the way!) and perhaps a mild brushless setup and you are more than good to hit the rally track!
Did you know that TT means Touring Trainer? Neither did I! Our photographer Jani Viipuri built this great Yaris.
Crossover Vehicle Zero Two
While versatile, TT-02 is still just a touring platform by its soul. If you want some real performance I'll guide you to the direction of XV-02 Pro Chassis. For those who complain that Tamiya never makes anything new - here it is! XV-02 was released this summer so it's still fresh like a daisy!
At this moment XV-02 is only available as a rolling chassis kit but you can fit any of the popular Tamiya rally bodies on it preatty easy. Things to highlight about the XV-02 include are but not limited to: Better chassis layout for RC Rally Builds, aluminum shocks, aluminum motor and servo mount, full ball bearings, dust cover, Rally Block tires..
Basically everything is here to make a fine RC Rally Car except the body.
What You See Is What You Get. This is what is inlcuded with the Tamiya XV-02 Pro Chassis Kit. Except the cutting mat and lamp base!
My friend has one of these and he has been very impressed of it. I am also more than excited to see what sweet versions we'll see of this car as the time passes. I would not say no for 2022 World Rally Championship winner Toyota Yaris WRT piloted by Kalle Rovanperä and Jonne Halttunen.
I mean they have the body already, just print new 2022 stickers and take my money!
WR8 2001 Subaru Impreza is a great car. Like really, really great car! Available also in almost 3hp nitro version.
HPI Subaru Best. Suck all the rest.
Now this does not really compare to anything I've told above but if you are serious in your rally cars then we have just the right car for you. HPI Racing 1:8 WR8 Subaru Impreza 2001 is just plain amazing. I borrowed one from our Storage Room and been blasting it since and I am totally in love!
It is hard to explain without handling you the controller but WR8 is as close a real rally car than RC can ever get. It has super low center of gravity, full metal gears, just right amount of power (ie. plenty) and while steering is more than sensitive it finds it way back to the center in no time. Driving this car is a bliss.
What is even better is that this car is also available in nitro! I've said this before but it makes me really happy to see new nitro rally car coming out in these days of electricity.
HPI Racing is taking back the place what belongs to it. Their cars have always been good so it's just great that we have the possibility to get our hands in those again!
OK this for now, next time I wont tell you anything about Tamiya cars. I promise! Thanks for reading. Photos of RC Rally Cars and unfinished builds are more than welcome!
Second gear in,
Heikki / EuroRC
